HUGH CORNWELL with very special guests The Primitives announce January 2024 – UK Tour!

The recently announced tour begins in Bury St.Edmunds on the 17th of January 2024 and they’ll be taking in Newcastle, Glasgow, Holmfirth, Brighton, London, Leamington Spa and Frome.

We recently spoke with founder member Paul ‘PJ’ Court about the upcoming planned tour with the Stranglers’ musician (the latter of whom we interviewed in our October issue of the Beat).

“On this upcoming tour with Hugh, we don’t know how much time we’ll have but we’ll be trying to pack in all our ‘biggies’ I suppose. An uptempo set with all the songs everybody knows. We also have a few of our gigs in between some of the tour dates in Manchester and Guildford”.

Have you ever toured with Hugh before?

“No, we haven’t. I saw him play live on his own a few years back and the Stranglers were one of the first bands I saw live when I saw them in 1979”.

The Primitives

Often described as an indie pop or indie rock band, The Primitives’ musical style can also be seen as straddling power pop, new wave, and post-punk.

“We were quite a different band when we started. A sort of 80’s alternative birthday party band and we wanted someone who could fit into our new direction at the time. Tracy was the only one who came along after about a year of trying to find someone and at first, we were going to give up trying to find someone because it felt so hopeless. We were trying our best and it seemed we were not going anywhere. Our last resort was getting a female singer as we wanted a male singer”.

And it seems that Tracy Tracy’s voice has gotten better over the years according to PJ. “Tracy has a better voice now and there are a lot more balls there now”.

“We did a few single releases over the last year but we like to keep it underground really as we don’t put them out on Spotify. Maybe we’ll do that later with a sort of compilation of our music on the streaming platforms.

We still do a lot of festivals like Mercia in Spain which was last month. Once Brexit came it restricted us a bit as we used to go over there twice a year but fortunately, Spain has resorted to the old rules which means we can play there still which was nice”.

Finally, we asked him if he was ready for Christmas.

“I haven’t thought about it much but I did a bit of shopping last night and got a few things out of the way. That’s me done I think”.

Read the full interview we had with PJ in our January issue of the Beat where he talks about the band’s regret of giving away little gifts with one of their releases which affected its chart sales.
